![]() Washington keeps it all pent up, even when it should come pouring out. McCall is gentler than Training Day's corrupt policeman, a do-gooder boy scout at heart, but he's also the love child of Jack Bauer and MacGyver, capable of mounting a 10-on-1 attack then tending to his bullet wounds with a spatula and some hot honey (a legit solution, apparently!). Unlike their previous collaboration, 2001's Oscar-winning Training Day, Fuqua can't nurture friction between a threatening man and his dangerous surroundings. Actor Marton Csokas kills it as Teddy, a ruthless bundle of brain and brawn that isn't given enough sparring time with the physically imposing Washington. McCall's first major encounter - a gory fisticuffs that owes its hyperkinetic framework to Guy Ritche's Sherlock Holmes - is so devastating, the Russians call in their fixer from overseas. After Teri suffers a coma-inducing beating at the hands of her pimp, The Equalizer decides it’s finally time to equalize, a vengeful investigation that picks a scab off the entire Russian mob. “Everything is dark, but this makes everything seem possible again.” McCall's life is so mundane, pitting him against anything worth his skill set is a chore. Before McCall can crack open his matryoshka doll of killer instincts, he must take parental walks with Teri, where she waxes poetic on the beauty of a bridge at night. What the original show could whip up in 10 minutes, writer Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2) pounds away at for an eternity. His current mission: Steer the diner's call girl patron Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) to a path that won't leave her dead in the back of a Russian mobster's limousine. He's beloved by his work family, heads home to his quiet Boston apartment, and spends the midnight hour drinking tea and reading classics like The Old Man and the Sea. With a shady past behind him, McCall clocks hours at Home-Depot-but-not-for-legal-reasons.
